Twenty-four channels at 3 amps

4096 grey levels

The channels decode at 4096 grey levels — 12-bit resolution. An 8-bit decoder has 256 steps, and the first few of those are visibly chunky when the LEDs dim down; with 4096 steps the same fade moves in increments the eye reads as continuous. Across the eight-zone builds the slow evening shifts hold their line on every zone at once, and the camera-visible installs do not step.

XLR-3R and the terminal block

The DMX512/1990 line lands two ways: the XLR-3R for the stage and event cabling, and the terminal block for the panels and cabinets where the line arrives on stripped conductors. The daisy-chain continues out of whichever connection the run arrived on, decoder to decoder across the zones. The twenty-four channels take twenty-four consecutive DMX addresses, and the addressing is set at the unit.

Working envelope

Working temperature spans -20°C to +55°C, which covers the plant rooms, the ceiling voids and the flight cases the installs travel through. Planning the install

Work the load per decoder against the strips: the 3-amp rating per channel and the power band that follows the voltage — 360 watts at 5V, 860 at 12V, 1,720 at 24V. Leave headroom below the per-channel rating rather than loading to it. Size the PSU for the connected load plus margin, land the DMX in and out on the connection the run uses, and give the decoder its start address — the zones take consecutive channels from there. The daisy-chain carries the line to the next decoder on the install.
